While opting for a remote job recently, I began a thorough search of what different options are available. I came up with a wide array of possible jobs that would be good for any remote worker.

What then are the different types of remote jobs on offer? While there are many factors one can be guided by in terms of suitability, remunerations, flexibility, timings, etc., there are multiple different jobs that answer to these specifications that one may choose from when working remotely.  Right from market advisor to a medical transcriptionist to geriatric companion to stress management jobs, the choices are immense.

My experience with remote job search led me to discover nearly 100 different ways I could keep myself engaged. Read on to get details of what options might be suitable for you. 

A broad overview of remote jobs and remote workers

In most cases, working from home needs very basic equipment in the form of a computer, an internet connection, a phone, and a headphone/microphone. Over long periods of time, remote work might affect productivity negatively due to the sheer tedium that tends to set in.  One needs to be able to manage this effectively.

Not only the pay but the kind of job you are in and how demanding it is, in the long run, are sure to play a big role in job satisfaction. In addition to these factors is the workplace that one chooses.  What is the most comfortable place that comes to mind first for anyone? In most cases, the answer is ‘home’. However, all jobs are not made to be executed from home.

Different types of remote workers

Anyone spending more than 20% of their job working from home is defined as a remote worker. In today’s times, the nature of work, kind of employers, and the workplace, all are undergoing a major shift towards moving online.  While there will always be a huge chunk of jobs that can never be done online, the sheer number of choices available to online and remote workers is only increasing each day.

There are, however, different kinds of remote workers too. Let us see what this means:

  1. Full time employee. As the name suggests, this person works full time from home for a company. They enjoy healthcare and retirement benefits in many cases.  There is flexibility in timings too. With assured salaries without going on-site, this works the best for most people.
  2. Moonlight employee. This person not only works on-site but also comes back home to work some more, most times for different companies doing totally diverse jobs. Not only can they earn more but also enjoy doing completely different types of jobs.
  3. Freelancers. This is the most common type of remote worker who works project to project for multiple clients.  They are paid hourly or per project. They get to be their own bosses to an extent.
  4. Remote owners. They are like traditional owners except they function remotely. They control and decide workflow while sitting at a remote location. Their workforce is also mainly remote. 
  5. Diversified remote worker. This person works at the same job but chooses to split it up to   partly on-site and partly remote to suit his needs.

These jobs can be full-time or part-time depending on the kind of time one can devote to work. While some of them are purely professional jobs, some others bring out the creative aspect while still others help serve the community and can be rewarding and fulfilling on a different plane altogether.

These are jobs where you are mostly required to work full time and they are like any other job on-site.  The big positive though is the flexibility that working from home or a remote location offers. This category of jobs answers to the call within of reaching out and giving back to society to a great extent.  They might not be exceptionally economically rewarding but are fulfilling on a different level altogether.
